Ushuaia
and
Tierra del Fuego
Tours and Travel
Capital of Tierra del Fuego and the most southern-placed
city in the world, as well as the nearest natural port to the Antarctica,
Ushuaia appears as a city with a population of 69.500 inhabitants
approx. (data from 1991) . It has an important touristic flux during
summer time.
It is situated at the Beagle Channel's coast and
the Martial Mountain's bottom, in a wonderful spot, surrounded by
magnificent landscapes. It is a really picturesque city with antique
houses made of wood and red roofs. The hotel complex offers tourists
a number of first class commodities, such as modern hotels at the
city's center, some feet away from the center, where visitors can
spend a pleasant stay. Moreover, Ushuaia's gastronomic center offers,
aside its international menu, two fabulous and traditional dishes:
King Crabs or Cordero Fueguino (lamb), both of them prepared in
a traditional way. Curiously, the weather in Ushuaia is quite good
considering the latitude. This fact is due to the city location,
between a mountain range and the sea, so temperature is around 6ºC
(43ºF) and 10ºC (50ªF). But the most curious and
significant climatological phenomenon is that the longest day and
the longest night occur at Ushuaia.

Description |
Tierra
del Fuego National Park
|
Was founded in 1960 and it concentrates about 68.000
ha. between Chile (west) and the Beagle Channel (south). The park
is famous because of the contrast between colourful woods of ñires
and lengas with touchs of green, yellow, red and ochre, and the majestic
mountains behind them. But the park's distinctive fact is that it
is the only one in Argentina that has sea coasts and is situated behind
Los Andes mountain range. |
Jail |
A great part of Ushuaian history started at this
institution. Very dangerous and famous prisioners were jailed in this
city. It closed its doors in 1947 and nowadays it can be visited by
tourists. |
Museo
del Fin del Mundo (museum) |
This attractive museum shows the island
past: rests from its first inhabitants (the Yamanas, Onas, Alcalufes
and Haush indians) as well as an excellent bird room. Moreover, this
attractive museum has an important scientific value as a number of
investigations on flora, fauna and patagonian antropology are done
there. |
